How to Mending a Suit Moth Hole

A small rip, moth hole, hem fallen down or other damage can ruin the look of a favourite suit, jumper or dress. If the damaged fabric is a quality natural fibre (such as wool, cashmere or silk) it can usually be mended invisibly, saving destroying the whole piece. Invisible mending is where each individual fibre is woven back into the fabric, and when done well is almost impossible to see.

The most important thing is to recognise when a moth hole needs repair, and to act quickly. This is because once the moths have discovered a tasty meal they will be relentless, gnawing away at your garment until it is destroyed.

Clothes moths are particularly attracted to natural fibre, but they will also attack synthetic materials if they are contaminated with animal or human fur, bodily fluids or pet hair, says Fryer. If you spot a hole in your clothing, check the label for care instructions and if possible, isolate the item. This will stop the pests spreading to other items in your wardrobe.

If you can’t isolate the item, put it into a sealed plastic bag, which will kill the larvae and prevent further damage. This is especially useful for heirlooms and antiques, or expensive designer clothes. You could also place a few moth balls into your closet, but Fryer advises against this as the toxins in them can actually be more harmful to the garment than the moths themselves.

Another good way to protect your clothing is by investing in a quality wool suit, as this type of premium and thick fabric offers a high level of protection against moths. Cheap suits, on the other hand, are far more likely to sustain moth damage, as the pests are able to easily chew through thin fabrics.

Lastly, make sure you hang your clothing up when not wearing it, and store it in a dark and clean location. This will prevent moths from crawling inside the casemaking larvae, which are often left on the surface of the clothing. Once the moth larvae have matured, they will drop their fecal pellets, which are known as frass, and these will easily fall off the clothing when you pick it up.

Invisible mending can cost up to $100 per garment, but this is a lot less than the price of buying a new suit. If you are serious about protecting your investment, it is worth investing in a specialist tailor that offers this service.
