GETTING STARTED: HOW TO FENG SHUI YOUR DESK
Feng Shui is the art of arranging your environment to attract positive energy and vibe. Everything is connected. By arranging objects in a certain way, your outer environment affects your inner environment, giving you positive results both in how you feel and what you attract to you. As an advanced practitioner and teacher of Feng Shui, my goal is to help you harbor and direct the BEST energy, better known as Chi. Everything in our environment is chi. And even though you can’t see it, like wind, gravity, or even Wi-Fi, it does exist and flows through every part of this company and this world.
We’ve all experienced good Chi and bad Chi in our lives. Most of us have had the experience of entering into a room that feels amazing. I call this a warm hug. On the flip side, we’ve all experienced entering a room or meeting someone who hits us in the gut and feels bad.
Many of you will do things just because of how it feels without even realizing you’re doing it. One great example is your office, cubicle, or your desk. Most people will set up their office to face the door so they can see who is coming into their office area. This is considered the most auspicious placement for your desk for those of you who have an office, take a look at your setup and ensure you are facing the door. It allows you to face the door without being vulnerable. If you don’t have your desk facing the door, start there first!
Chi is one of the most important factors in the study of Feng Shui. It is the core of all teachings that we build from. It is important to understand how using Feng Shui principles at work is different than simply organizing your space or decorating it in a pretty manner. Utilizing the principles of Feng Shui (or Acupuncture for our space, I like to call it) for our environment has a profound impact on us emotionally, physically, mentally, and spiritually.
When applied correctly, it can vastly improve your well-being, how you think, how you act, how you feel, and your overall state of being. And since you spend so much time in your workspace it only makes sense to improve your work surface in any way possible to improve your work, your workflow, and perhaps the added benefit of feeling more in control, organized, and a feeling of better well-being. Using the principles of Feng Shui can help eliminate toxicity in any work environment.
Let’s dive into the world of Feng Shui and energy alignment with the Wood Dragon to revolutionize your workspace for success!
First things first, let’s get acquainted with the powerful tool known as the ba-gua map. Pronounced bag-wa, this tool segments nine major areas of your life into an essential energy blueprint. By utilizing this map, you can strategically set up your desk to harness success and productivity.
But before you dive in, remember to clear all clutter. As Carol Olmsted wisely points out, clutter is postponed energy, leading to chaos and disorganization. So let’s tidy up and make space for abundance! Remove the garbage cans from under your desk or at least ensure you only use them for paper. No food or rotting materials. Get up and put that in the garbage receptacles.
Now, let’s set up your desk in an imaginary grid, mirroring the nine life areas of the ba-gua map:
Bottom left corner – This area symbolizes learning and knowledge. Keep a reference book, a journal of notes, or essential work documents here to keep the chi flowing.
Middle left – The family area signifies connection and expansion. Place a cherished family photo or items representing new ideas and projects here.
Top left – Wealth & Power- Your financial corner! Keep your computer or wealth-related items here, along with your financial goals for manifestation (think the vision board training from a couple of weeks back).
Bottom middle – Clear space for work and career-related tasks. This is where your immediate projects get completed.
Center – Focus on health and balance in this area. Keep herbal tea or reminders of self-care to promote well-being. You might wish to place something round or draw a circle on a piece of paper and keep it there to remind you that you live and work in harmonious environments.
Top middle – The fame area! Showcase your accomplishments, awards, ribbons, or a representation of what you are known for. You can add your title or a stack of business cards to attract recognition and success.
Bottom right – This area represents helpful people and travel. Place a book on travel or items connecting you to the divine to foster support and guidance or a representation of a Mentor to attract the best helpful people into your life.
Middle right – Stimulate creativity and joy in this area. Journaling tools or sources of inspiration should reside here to spark that ‘a-ha’ moment. Place something that makes you smile here.
Top right – The marriage and relationship area. Keep fresh flowers, a representation of two such as 2 hearts/2 doves/2 birds, or symbols of love to nurture your relationships, both personal and professional.
