For Axes with great skills and Abilities, you'll have to pick Charge, Gravity Well, and Maelstrom from the Reaper and Mauler Skill Trees. Charge is a great gap closer, which propels players towards enemies who are fleeing uninterrupted. It can also be used against players and bosses who have been able to knock you back. With this Ability, you can steer towards the direction you're charging at and it's easy to apply. Gravity Well is amazing at crowd control because it allows players to gather enemies and slow them down. This is fantastic with other AoE Abilities to ensure that you do massive damage.
